HAVE YOU EVER SAID “I DESERVE IT”?

I recently read an excerpt from an old Western movie that goes something like this:

Munny vs. Daggett

William Munny stood over a writhing, bleeding, gut-shot Little Bill Dagget.

Daggett, a crooked lawman and the villain of Clint Eastwood’s 1992 Western Unforgiven portrayed by the incredible Gene Hackman, pleads, “I don’t deserve this…to die like this. I was building a house.”

While Daggett had more to say, those were the last words ever spoken to him.

Arguably, truer words have never been spoken, either on- or off-screen.

At first, I found this excerpt ironic and humorous, because we, too, have been building a house!  The more I mulled over this story, the more I thought how appropriate it was to many people’s thinking today.  Have you ever thought to yourself …

“I deserve to buy a new _____.  I have worked so hard!”

“I deserve to buy a new pair of _____, after all I’ve been through!”

“I deserve to buy another ______; that’s money my parents gave me, so it’s not as though I am spending my own money!”

Before buying things because you “deserve” them, try reflecting on these two very important questions:

  1. Where are you right now with money in relation to your Goals?
    1. Are you saving for a large purchase?
    1. Do you have several monthly payments already?
    1. Is this “Deserve” purchase in alignment with your goals?
  • Where are you right now with money in relation to your Mental Well Being?
    •  Will your “I deserve it” purchase replace something that was worn out or broken?
    • How long will this purchase give you satisfaction/happiness?
    • How much other “stuff” have you purchased that you thought would make you happy? Did it? Why or why not?

“If you measure something, you can understand it. If you understand it, you can control it, and if you can control it, you can improve it.” The same holds true in your monthly budgeting.

The reality is that it is nearly impossible to complete & follow a monthly budget without improving your overall financial position. There are several reasons for this, so I would challenge you to do this.

First, just developing a budget for yourself will raise your awareness of what you have for revenue or income sources and then also boost your cognizance of how much you are spending each month. Next, you will come to grips with the reality of one of three facts. Either you need to boost your income sources, reduce your outgoing expenditures or, thank goodness, if you have more income than expenses, you can then save some money. Of course, this is fantastic! You just need to determine where you will store or invest those extra funds each month…
