Do you ever wonder what it would be like to be completely free of financial worries? Many people do, but many of them also think it is impossible to achieve. It is not!
The key to personal financial success is to decide what goal you want to achieve, put some financial numbers on it and then establish a budget for that same objective. Now, you can do this for every goal you have, but today, I’d like to focus on the benefits of budgeting, in general.
First, what can get you to your goal any faster than knowing where you are, at any given moment? Your budget will tell you the answers you need. If you are making $3,000/month but spending $3,250, you have a real challenge on your hand. While this is not insurmountable, the sooner you get started, the better off you will be.
I’ve done this same process personally and with several family members. While it may be easier with a spreadsheet program, you can do this with a simple worksheet format (you can find one on this website). Simply stated, you need to know where your money goes each month.
Start by listing your specific Income Sources and all your monthly Expenses. It will provide you with the basis for success with this process. It is a fact that if you measure something (Income & Expenses in this case), you will understand it. If you understand it, you can gain control over it, and, of course, if you can control it, you can make improvements on it. This is absolutely true when it comes to budgetary matters.
The key here is to spend less than you earn. There are two ways to accomplish this task. One, you can earn greater amounts of income, or you can limit your expenses. Both represent great options to achieve your financial goals, but they both begin with determining where you currently are on Income & Expenses. Hence, start by establishing where these two items currently are, by setting up your budget.
This is not necessarily an overnight process, but the sooner you get started, the quicker you can reach your goals. While many people think that budgeting is a strict method to control your spending, the reality is that this process may also stimulate your thinking about potential new sources of income.
Ultimately, what will be the key to your success? Perseverance. Even if you have some doubts, stay with the budgeting process, and success will prevail. Stay focused. Stay engaged with your goal, and you will get there!
